Recruitment Horror Stories

Recruitment Horror Stories for Hallowe’en – Recruitment can be a scary ride. For every smooth, successful hire, there’s another that makes you want to scream into a cushion. Whether you’re a recruiter, a hiring manager, or a jobseeker, chances are you’ve witnessed a few spine chilling moments where things went bump in dark!

So grab a cuppa, dim the lights, and settle in for some truly terrifying tales from the world of hiring.

Recruitment Horror Stories

The Candidate Who Brought Their Mum

Yes, this one really happened. A hiring manager at a mid-sized tech firm shared how a candidate—let’s call him “Tom”—showed up to his interview with his mother in tow. Not just for moral support, either. Mum came right into the meeting room, sat beside her son, and began answering questions for him.

When asked about his experience, she proudly explained how “Tom has always been very good with computers” and that “he’s just a bit shy in interviews”.

The interview didn’t last long. The hiring manager politely thanked them both and wrapped things up early. Tom didn’t get the job, but he certainly left a lasting impression.

Lesson learned: confidence is great, but independence is even better.

The CV That Lied (A Lot)

Most recruiters have seen a little “embellishment” on a CV before. Maybe someone stretches a date here or upgrades a job title there. But one candidate took creative writing to a whole new level.

They claimed to have a master’s degree from a well-known university—complete with distinction—and ten years’ experience in a field that didn’t even exist ten years ago. When the recruiter did a quick reference check, they discovered not only had the candidate never attended the university, but the degree programme itself had never been offered there.

When confronted, the candidate tried to laugh it off: “Oh, that must have been a typo!”

Lesson learned: honesty really is the best policy. The truth always comes out, and no “typo” can cover a fake degree.

The Interview That Turned into a Therapy Session

Interviews can be nerve-wracking, and it’s natural to want to connect on a human level. But sometimes, candidates overshare – a lot!

One recruiter recounted a 45-minute interview that quickly spiralled into a full-blown emotional confessional. The candidate talked about their breakup, their issues with their neighbour, and even their recent spiritual awakening.

While the recruiter tried to steer things back to job-related questions, it was impossible to recover the professional tone. The candidate thanked them at the end and said it felt “better than therapy”.

Lesson learned: interviews are not counselling sessions. Keep it professional, even when nerves kick in.

The Ghosted Employer

We often hear about employers ghosting candidates – we recently wrote a separate blog on it!

Recent data reveals concerning trends:

34% of Gen Z workers have actively “career catfished,” accepting roles only to vanish on their first day.

28% of job applicants admit to ghosting recruiters in the past year.

76% of recruiters report being ghosted, up significantly from previous years.

A boutique marketing agency spent weeks interviewing a seemingly perfect candidate. They offered her the job, sent over the contract, and she enthusiastically accepted. But on the first day… nothing. No phone call, no email, no show.

After several attempts to reach her, the hiring manager gave up. Two weeks later, they stumbled across her LinkedIn update: she’d started a new job elsewhere—on the same day she was supposed to start with them!

Lesson learned: communication goes both ways. If you’ve changed your mind, just say so—it’s kinder for everyone involved.

The Disappearing Interview Panel

It’s not only candidates who can cause chaos. Sometimes, it’s the hiring team that drops the ball.

One poor candidate arrived on time for a second-round interview at a large organisation. After waiting 20 minutes in reception, they were told the entire interview panel was “stuck in another meeting”. Another 40 minutes later, still no sign of them.

Eventually, a the HR coordinator came to apologise, apparently the interviewers had forgotten the meeting entirely. The candidate was rescheduled, but by that point they’d already decided they didn’t want to work there.

Lesson learned: candidates are interviewing you too. A little respect goes a long way.

The Video Call Disaster

Ah, remote interviews – a goldmine for modern-day mishaps.

One recruiter recalled interviewing a candidate who seemed very distracted. Halfway through, the camera suddenly tilted, revealing the candidate sitting in bed, wearing pyjama bottoms and eating crisps. When asked if it was a good time to talk, they cheerfully said, “Oh yes, I’m multitasking!”

Another story involved a candidate who forgot to mute themselves while shouting at their dog to “stop licking the bin”. It’s fair to say the professional image suffered slightly.

Lesson learned: treat virtual interviews exactly like in-person ones. Cameras, backgrounds, and trousers matter.

The Offer That Vanished

And finally, the scariest story of all: the disappearing job offer.

After three rounds of interviews and glowing feedback, a candidate received a verbal offer. They were ecstatic! They handed in their notice, celebrated with friends, and waited for the written contract.

Then… silence. Days passed. Emails went unanswered. Eventually, HR admitted there’d been an internal hiring freeze. No written offer. No job. No backup plan.

Lesson learned: nothing’s official until it’s in writing. Always wait for the signed contract before you pop the champagne.

The good news? Every misstep offers a chance to improve. Employers can tighten their processes, candidates can learn how to present themselves better, and recruiters can keep their sense of humour intact.
